Top seed Akron advances to MAC men’s championship game

No. 1 seed Akron is one game from dancing during March Madness.
The Zips built a double-digit lead at halftime against No. 4 seed Toledo and won their semifinal, 100-90, on March 14 at the Mid-American Conference men’s basketball tournament at Rocket Arena.
Akron plays the winner of Kent State-Mia
mi in the MAC championship game March 15 at 7:40 p.m. The winner gets the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, which starts next week.
Akron improved to 27-6, and Toledo fell to 18-15.
The Zips sizzled from the floor all night as they made 32 of 57 shots (56.1%) and were 55.6% from 3-point range (10 of 18).
Nate Johnson had a huge game for Akron as the guard scored a game-high 31 points on 10 of 16 shooting — including 3 of 4 from 3-point range — and made 8 of 8 free throws. He added six assists, five rebounds and two blocks.
Four others joined Johnson in double-figure scoring — Tavari Johnson (15), Isaiah Gray (15), Shammah Scott (14) and Amani Lyles (12).
The Rockets chipped away at their double-digit halftime deficit in the second half, and a little less than 3 minutes in they trailed, 52-47. However, back-to-back buckets by Nate Johnson pushed the lead back to 10 points.
Toledo made one final push when Seth Hubbard made two free throws to make it a 70-65 game with 11 minutes to play but it couldn’t get any closer.
Hubbard scored a team-high 28 points for the Rockets, and teammate Sam Lewis added 23. ...read more read less
