Chardon boys basketball: Shane Quin tapped as next head coach for Hilltoppers
Mar 14, 2025
Shane Quin always wanted to be at Chardon. The Hilltopper alum has been a part of the staff for football and basketball since 2023 after finishing his playing career at Ohio Wesleyan on the gridiron.
Quin was announced as the new Hilltoppers’ head coach March 12 in a news release from Athletic Dir
ector Doug Snyder. He takes over from Chad Murawski after his nine-year tenure at the helm.
Murawski stepped down to spend more time with his family, as he and his wife welcomed their second child recently.
“It wasn’t always the plan. My goal was to always come back and coach at Chardon,” Quin said. “I love Chardon. I love the community. I plan to raise my family here with my wife. I knew I wanted to be here and that eventually I wanted to be a head coach, I just didn’t know if the timing was going to be right. It all just worked out perfectly here at Chardon.”
Quin is also an assistant coach for football and played under Mitch Hewitt during his time as a Hilltopper.
Hewitt also recently stepped down at the conclusion of the 2024 season, with Brian Landies taking over after being an assistant coach on the staff as well. It’s a new wave of coaches coming in for the Hilltoppers.
Baseball coach Brian Long also stepped down at the end of the last baseball season, with Bob Francis and Greg Fronk being named co-head coaches.
Quin is excited to be a part of the next step for the school’s head coaches. Carrying the mindset and mentality into the new era is high on his list of goals as a coach.
“Those two guys right there are the reason that I got into coaching,” Quin said. “Those guys coached me, and I loved to play for them. They steered me into coaching, along with Coach (Brian) Long. There’s a lot of wins between those three coaches. It’s really cool to be a part of it and the new era of coaches here at Chardon. I think the CVC is a great fit for Chardon. I really think it’ll be a good next chapter for Chardon.”
Chardon had a challenging campaign in 2024-25, as it went 7-15 with a first-round exit to Chaney. But the Hilltoppers return a lot of strong players for next season.
Luke Galfidi returns averaging 19.1 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and two steals as he heads into his junior campaign. Rocco Tarantino averaged 14.5 points with 50 3-pointers and will also be a junior.
Quin sees the team ready with the leadership and is excited for the next steps of the program.
“I really like the kids we have coming back, and I really like the kids in our program,” Quin said. “It was one of the many reasons why I’m excited about this opportunity. We have a lot coming through right now. I think the toughness and physicality are what other programs try to epitomize. When I was coaching with Mitch and Chad, we always had that mindset and hopefully we get to continue that moving forward.” ...read more read less
