Tommy Hawke scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the ninth, giving the Guardians an 8-7 win over the Mariners on March 14. Hawke, a sixth-round selection in the 2023 draft out of Wake Forest who played at Low-A Lynchburg last season, came on as a pinch-runner for Kody Huff. Huff had led off t he frame with a double. Micah Pries followed and hit a grounder toward second. But Seattle’s Josh Hood sent the throw to first wide of the bag, allowing Hawke to plate the decisive run. Lane Thomas belted a three-run home run in the fifth, his third homer of the spring. Will Brennan, serving as the designated hitter out of the No. 9 hole, had a pair of two-run home runs in the sixth and in the eighth. Kolby Allard worked three solid innings, allowing one run on three hits. Bradley Hanner (1-0) got the win despite yielding a run in the top of the ninth to tie the game.
