Bill to return Ten Commandments monument to Kentucky Capitol heads to governor
Mar 14, 2025
FRANKFORT, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – A joint resolution aimed at relocating a historic Ten Commandments monument back to the Kentucky State Capitol is now awaiting Governor Andy Beshear’s signature.
According to officials, the Kentucky Senate passed House Joint Resolution 15 (HJR 15) on Wednesd
ay in a 32-6 vote. The measure, which previously passed the House 79-13, would restore the monument to the Capitol grounds.
Lawmakers say the monument was originally placed at the Capitol in 1971. However, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) successfully sued to block its reinstallation 25 years later. The monument was then moved to Hopkinsville, where it remains today.
The resolution now heads to Gov. Beshear, who will decide whether to approve or veto the measure.
