Jury finds Green Bay man guilty of homicide for 2023 killing on Western Avenue

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) - On Thursday, a jury found Owen Backus guilty of Homicide in connection to the deadly 2023 killing at his residence on Green Bay's Western Avenue.
Court records show that 46-year-old Backus appeared in court on March 13 where he was found guilty after a jury trial, and had
his bond revoked.

Backus was identified as the suspect in the killing of 30-year-old Michael Hubbard stemming from a December 2023 incident at Backus' Green Bay residence on Western Avenue.
According to the criminal complaint, Backus told officers that a man broke into his house and came after him with a wrench. When officers asked if the man beat Backus up, he responded with ‘I think I beat him up, but he was trying to.’
Officers went into the residence and found Hubbard lying face down on the floor with blood all around him. The victim was seen with a t-shirt over his face with a white cord wrapped around his neck.

Authorities reviewed jail calls that Backus made shortly after getting arrested. The complaint says that it was clear that Backus and the victim knew each other and were mutual friends.
Backus is scheduled to be sentenced on June 9 at 3 p.m. ...read more read less
