MEMPHIS, Tenn. --- The Memphis man charged with a 2023 hit-and-run that left a woman dead is now back in custody after he was originally released on his own recognizance.
DeAndrea Clark was booked into the Shelby County Jail on Thursday. He is facing charges of vehicular homicide and leaving the
scene of an accident involving death.
According to Memphis Police, in October 2023, Clark crashed into another vehicle on Kirby Parkway and 385 after he sped through a red light and crossed over grass.
Police say Clark was going 85 mph seconds before impact. Memphis Police say Clark was also driving on a suspended license and without car insurance.
Family awaits day in court after loved one killed in hit-and-run
Sarah Hamer was killed in the crash. WREG spoke with Hamer's family on Tuesday.
“She was just the closest thing to perfect you can get to," Hamer’s niece, Khadijah Richardson, said, "and we miss her greatly."
Clark was taken into custody in December 2023. In January 2024, he was released on his own recognizance.
Since then, court records show that Clark has been in and out of court because of changes to his bond. According to court records, Clark's bond was revoked in August 2024 only to be reinstated weeks later.
Court records state that in November 2024, a judge ruled that Clark's bond was forfeited and a warrant was issued for his arrest. A final judgement on the Clark's bond forfeiture was handed down in December 2024.
On Tuesday, Hamer's family told WREG that Clark would soon be back in a courtroom to be held accountable.
“It seems as though vehicular homicide cases aren’t taken as seriously as homicides with knives and guns,” Richardson said. “But at the end of the day, a life was taken.”
So far, there is no hearing scheduled or bond set for Clark. ...read more read less
