Some CTA buses to start giving out tickets for blocking bike, bus lanes

The Chicago Transit Authority plans to deploy ticket-writing cameras on some of its buses this summer as part of the city's bike and bus lane enforcement pilot.Cameras added to six CTA buses will begin issuing warnings and tickets in July or August, according to a CTA spokesperson. ll be determined after a 60-day testing period begins in May or June.The CTA board on Wednesday approved a $315,852 contract with Hayden AI for the cameras and technology. The city's Transportation Department has said the cameras will be fixed to buses using Dearborn, Madison and Washington streets and Chicago Avenue.The automated lane enforcement program is part of a two-year Smart Streets pilot program, begun in November, within the downtown area bounded by North and Ashland avenues, Roosevelt Road and Lake Michigan.Cameras attached to eight Department of Finance and Transportation Department vehicles have doled out more than 11,000 warnings and nearly 1,400 tickets through the end of February, according to a CTA news release.The potential violations include $90 fines for parking in a bus lane, $250 fines for bike path obstructions, $50 tickets for parking in expired meters outside of the central business district, and $140 tickets for personal vehicles parked in commercial loading zones.The city's Transportation Department delayed implementing the pilot program over a year and a half.
