PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Rhode Island Attorney General Peter F. Neronha joined a group of 20 other attorneys general in suing the Trump administration for its dismantling of the Department of Education.
In a statement, Neronha said:
The Trump Administration’s unlawful attack on the Department
of Education is an attack on children from all walks of life across this country. Let’s drill down to what this means for our kids. As with almost any organization, the Department of Education will be incapacitated by the sudden layoffs of half of its workforce, not to mention the Administration’s ultimate goal of eliminating the Department altogether.
This is in reaction to the administration’s firing of 50 percent of the Department of Education’s workforce on March 11.
The statement went on to say that the Trump administration’s actions would incapacitate the department and deprive students with special needs of resources and support.
The department’s Office of Civil Rights will also be under attack, according to the statement, as well as the financial aid process for prospective college students.
Rhode Island joins a group of states including Massachusetts, Connecticut and California in the legal action.
The White House has yet to make a comment about this lawsuit.
