City closes problem motel in northwest Albuquerque

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – An Albuquerque motel that's a hotspot for crime, drugs, and human trafficking is being forced to close by the city. The city said police have responded to almost 600 calls for service in one year at the motel alone, and on Wednesday they took action to close it down.

“I can tell you that this hotel behind us was a cesspool for criminal activity. Whether or not it was prostitution, drug trafficking, retail crime, shootings, people getting hurt, people being trafficked here. Sex trafficked. This place had to be shut down,” said Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman at a press conference on Wednesday.
The Motel 6 on Coors Blvd. and Iliff Rd., has been a crime hotspot for years. The city inspected the motel Tuesday and discovered multiple code violations. Those violations in conjunction with the high criminal activity forced the city to shut it down.
The city also recently closed multiple motels along Central for similar issues, including Tewa Lodge, Bow and Arrow Motel, and Loma Verde. It's all a part of the city's plan to keep motels and hotels in check. On Wednesday, city officials said this shutdown is just the beginning.
Albuquerque Community Safety is helping relocate those vacated from the property, connecting them to temporary and long-term housing. ACS said there were 31 people living at the motel at the time of the operation.
Gabriel Herrera was arrested at the same Motel Six Tuesday morning during a code enforcement operation. An officer noticed him from an arrest warrant in a shoplifting case where he didn't show up for trial earlier this month.
