AUSTIN (KXAN) -- The afternoon south wind along with relatively dry air continues to bring elevated fire weather conditions across Central Texas, especially in the Hill Country where the Wildfir
e Danger is a 4 out of 5 (very high).
High to very fire danger on Thursday
Wind gusts will gradually come down this evening and relative humidity values will rise overnight as high and then low clouds increase in coverage over our skies.
Friday will start with low clouds, but gradually we'll turn mostly sunny with highs pushing into the mid 80s thanks to a south-southwesterly wind and some compressional heating ahead of Saturday's cold front.
Highs on Friday
This Weekend
Saturday's temperature forecast is tricky as a strong cold front arrives. The timing of arrival makes for a challenging temperature forecast as an earlier arrival could mean highs in the low 70s and a later arrival could mean highs in the low to mid 80s. The trends have been for a slightly later arrival and therefore a warmer forecast, but temperatures will drop quickly once the front arrives.
We may sneak in a stray shower or sprinkle of drizzle in the morning before sun comes out in the afternoon. Once our front moves through, gusty northwest winds will follow that should bring a return to elevated fire weather concerns.
Sunday looks mostly sunny and cooler with highs in the mid 60s. While we'll still have a noticeable breeze, the cooler temperatures should help to lower the fire risk over Saturday.
Weekend forecast
Don't forget we "Spring Forward" on Sunday as we mark the beginning of Daylight Saving Time at 2 a.m.. Clocks advance one-hour making for the shortest day of the year and more light in the evening.
Next week
Next week generally looks warm, mostly sunny and dry with periods of concerning winds that would bring additional fire weather concerns.
Some of our warmest temperatures of the year may arrive by late next week with highs up near 90.
