The winners of Washington County’s second Name a Snowplow contest were announced Tuesday by the Washington County Department of Public Works. More than 2,400 people voted in the contest and the top two vote-getters were Sir Plows a lot with 680 votes and Land of 10,000 Flakes coming in at a close second with 677 votes. Sir Plows a lot will be seen working in the northern half of the county for the most part, while Land of 10,000 Flakes will be located in the southern part of the county. More than 1,200 names were submitted for consideration; county officials narrowed the list down to 10 finalists. The other finalists were: SKOL Plow, Snowby Keith, Stone Cold Steve Frostin’, De-Ice Ice Baby, Mr. Clean, Just Scrapin’ By, Snow Problem and Hotdish Hauler. Of the finalists, Mr. Clean received the fewest votes at 150, said Allie Berndt, a spokeswoman for the department. This is the second year Washington County Department of Public Works has held a contest to name some of its 26 snowplows. Last year’s winners were Plowabunga and Taylor Drift. Washington County started the contest last year as a way to “engage with residents and the communities we serve,” Berndt said. “Following MnDOT’s success with their own Name a Snowplow contest, it seemed like a fun and simple initiative that people enjoyed,” she said. “After the overwhelming responses we received last year, we decided to hold the contest again this year and received even more responses and votes.” Voting opens for MnDOT contest In other snowplow naming news, the Minnesota Department of Transportation on Tuesday released its list of 50 finalists for its snowplow naming contest. MnDOT received more than 7,300 suggestions this year. Two of the Timberwolves scored slots on the list of finalists: Anthony Sledwards and Rudy GoBrrr. Minnesota’s Bob Dylan isn’t completely unknown, as Bob Chillin’ and Plowin’ In The Wind both made the list too. The top eight vote-getters will become new MnDOT snowplow names, one new name for each MnDOT district, officials said. This is the fifth year the agency has held a snowplow-naming contest. MnDOT officials said they considered a variety of factors when selecting this year’s list of finalists, including uniqueness, frequency of submissions, Minnesota-specific ideas and names that would be easily identifiable and understandable to most audiences.
