CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WJZY) — A worker at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) died Monday after being struck by an airline ramp vehicle on the tarmac, local police have confirmed.
The accident took place around 9:30 a.m. Airport officials did not disclose the circumstances surrounding the accident, but did say that only one vehicle was involved.
American Airlines later identified the deceased worker as one of its own.
"We are devastated by the accident involving a team member at Charlotte International Airport (CLT)," a spokesperson for the airline said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and our local team members. We are focused on ensuring that all involved have the support they need during this difficult time."

Audio from a dispatch call indicated that emergency and medical crews were sent to the scene of the incident within minutes. A medic was also able to confirm a "10-67" — or a death — on-site, the audio revealed.
"Our deepest condolences go out to the employee's family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time," a spokesperson for CLT said. "The Airport is working closely with airline and first responder partners in the ongoing investigation and is providing support as needed. Airport chaplains are available onsite."
The North Carolina Department of Labor says they are aware of the death, and would be sending an officer to do an inspection.
