Lafayette Police: Man arrested after reported shooting, stabbing Monday afternoon

LAFAYETTE, Ind. --A man was arrested after a reported shooting and stabbing occurred in Lafayette Monday afternoon.
According to a news release from the Lafayette Police Department, officers responded to the area of N 10th St. and Tippecanoe St. on a report of shots fired. When officers arrived at the scene, they located a 42-year-old man with injuries to his arm.
The department said the injuries were initially believed to be from a gunshot wound. However, the release said that police found that the 42-year-old man had been stabbed. The victim was taken to an Indianapolis hospital and is in stable condition.
As officers investigated the shooting, the release said shell casings were found in the intersection of N 10th St. and Tippecanoe St. Through the investigation, a suspect was identified by police as 40-year-old Matthew Kipper.

The release said that Kipper was later located in the area of N 12th St. and Hartford St. Kipper was reportedly found in possession of firearms at the time of his arrest.
Kipper was taken into custody and was preliminarily charged with:
Aggravated battery
Battery resulting in serious bodily injury
Battery with a deadly weapon
Possession of a machine gun
Criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon
"The Lafayette Police Department extends its gratitude to the officers and detectives who worked diligently to resolve this incident and to the community for their cooperation and assistance," the release said.
Officials said the relationship between the victim and the suspect remains unknown and the investigation is ongoing.
