RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Tax season is officially underway, with Virginia taxpayers now able to file their individual income tax returns. To receive a faster refund and to avoid fraud, Virginians can file their taxes online early. The Virginia Department of Taxation, or Virginia Tax, takes refund fraud seriously and wants citizens to take it seriously, as well. Virginia's online filing system helps review returns for any suspicious activity or any possible fraud. "We strongly recommend electronic filing,” said James J. Alex, the state's tax commissioner. “It’s the faster, safer option for taxpayers. We also recommend you request your refund, if you have one coming, via direct deposit.” Two Virginia children die from flu, mark first pediatric deaths this flu season Here are a few steps to help make sure your tax return and refund won’t be delayed: Make sure you have all W-2s, 1099s and other information before filing your return. Include your Virginia driver’s license or Virginia identification card number on your return. Returns won’t get rejected if the information is not provided, but it will help the process move more quickly. Make sure your name is spelled right, your Social Security number(s) are accurate and all calculations are correct. Use your current address, even if you've moved since you last filed your taxes. Additionally, for secure, online self-service, you can create and log onto an online individual account on the Virginia Tax website. You can use that account to track your returns and refunds by using the Where’s My Refund application. For more information, visit the Virginia Tax website or call 804-367-2486. ...read more read less
