WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (WAVY) — Ever wonder what it would be like to drive a school bus? Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools offered potential applicants a chance get behind the wheel Monday, and invited 10 On Your Side's Stephanie Hudson to take a spin. The school division is currently short 34 drivers and wanted to offer the opportunity for people who might be interested but hesitant to try it. "We're trying to show them that it's easier than what they may expect," said Marcellus Snipes," Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools' director of operations. "Some people have a fear of larger vehicles." About 25 potential applicants signed up to take a test drive. Nick Kier, who already works for the school division, wanted to give it a try, also. "I have actually always thought that when I retire, I could potentially go be a bus driver as something to do," Kier said. "I'm not going to be able to sit at home. I was surprised at how well the bus turned. It was actually very easy to drive." Of course, there's a lot more to being a bus driver than perusing a parking lot loop. The school division will pay for you to get your CDL license. Starting pay is $20.26 an hour, there's a sign-on bonus and parents can bring their kids over age two to work with them. "I think the difficult part about it is really getting over your own fears," Snipes said. If you're interested in driving a bus or test driving one, contact James City County Schools.
