INDIANAPOLIS -- Every day, people get duped by the promise of love and affection and it ends up costing them big bucks. Romance scams usually involve some kind of fake online profile photo. And now we’re getting a look at some of the photos used by scammers in their schemes. The Social Catfish website just released their list of the 100 top “Catfished” photos of 2025.  That is, the profile pictures most used in romance scams over the last year. “He says he’s from the U.S., but works out of the country,” a public service announcement from the Federal Trace Commission described. “He says he wants to visit, but says he can’t afford it.” “Last month it was medical bills for his sick aunt. This month, he needs money to fix his car. Next month, who knows,” the FTC video continued. “If that love interest says they can’t meet you in person, asks you for money, or you find their picture on several profiles, you know it’s a scammer.” Social catfish used a reverse image search of 1.5 million profile pictures and gathered the 100 pictures used most often in romance scams over the last year. The people in the pictures aren’t crooks. In fact, they’re victims too because some smooth-talking criminals are using their images for their schemes. Social Catfish has a reverse image search tool on its website. You can upload a photo and see if it’s being used for multiple profiles. Just keep in mind you have to enter your email address to use the tool.
