SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WPRI) — One firefighter was injured, but the occupant of the home was unharmed after a boiler room fire in Smithfield on Sunday night. Fire crews said they responded to a home on Putnam Pike just before 7 p.m., where a fire had broken out near a home heating unit. Deputy Chief Steve Quattrini told 12 News firefighters were able to contain the fire to a boiler room and quickly extinguish it. The sole occupant was removed from the house without injury and did not return for the night, as heavy smoke had accumulated on the first floor. Quattrini said a firefighter suffered minor injuries and was transported by a rescue to Fatima Hospital.
