VERMILLION, S.D. (KELO) -- SDSU and USD played for the first time this basketball season on Saturday, and the Jackrabbit women claimed a 77-59 road victory.
State used a 16-0 run in the first quarter to surge in front. After the Coyotes cut into the deficit before halftime, the Jackrabbits opened the third quarter with a 17-2 rally to take a 26-point lead.
SDSU had four players in double figures, while South Dakota had just two. While both teams shot below 30% from 3-point land, the Jacks capitalized in the paint, outscoring the Yotes by 16.
"I think a big emphasis for us is just defense," SDSU redshirt junior guard Haleigh Timmer said. "I think defense leads to offense a lot of times. And that energy that we generate on the defensive end can lead to good offensive plays, too. So I think when we're together offensively and defensively, that's when we play the best."
"They have a bunch of great players, very physical, and so just testing us in the paint a little bit and we just have to play really good team basketball," USD senior guard Grace Larkins said. "I think we're taking big strides for that, but we're not exactly where we need to be yet."
Larkins netted a game-high 27 points, while Timmer and Brooklyn Meyer netted 15 apiece for the Jacks.
