NEW FRANKEN, Wis. (WFRV) - 75 years ago, in 1950, a devastating fire destroyed the Rockwood Lodge, the Green Bay Packers' first self-contained training facility, located about 17 miles northeast of Green Bay.  While the fire itself was tragic, it also set in motion a series of events that would reshape the future of the Packers and the city of Green Bay. The Rockwood Lodge had been a symbol of progress for the Packers when it was acquired in 1946. The facility, nestled in the peaceful Wisconsin countryside, was the first of its kind in professional football—an all-inclusive, self-sufficient training camp.  Officers looking for employee of a Wisconsin Target Distribution Center who threatened coworker with a gun It was a place where the Packers could work on their skills in private, away from the distractions of city life. But by 1950, what had once seemed like an innovative asset had become a financial burden.  The high maintenance costs of the remote location, combined with the team’s struggles on the field, made it a challenge to sustain. The Packers had just finished a disappointing 2-10 season in 1949, and the financial woes of the franchise were mounting. The fire that consumed Rockwood Lodge, added fuel to the already intense pressure. However, as the smoke cleared, there was an unexpected silver lining. Fortunately, the team’s equipment had been stored elsewhere, sparing the Packers from losing their valuable gear in the fire. In addition, the $75,000 insurance payout provided a much-needed financial boost to a struggling franchise that had been teetering on the edge. The fire, while devastating, set the stage for major changes for the team. Shortly after the blaze, Packers founder and head coach Curly Lambeau, who had been with the team since the beginning, departed due to internal disagreements and the team’s continued financial struggles.
