LEWIS CENTER, Ohio (WCMH) -- Video from a November encounter outside a Lewis Center home, where a Black man was questioned if he lived there, was recently posted on social media and is now drawing attention from podcasts and making headlines in other countries.  The husband and wife who shared the video said they did so to show that cooler heads can prevail in tough situations, but they also want people to be mindful of how their actions can affect others.  Macy’s announces planned store closures, including locations in Ohio Life for the Jenkins family, living in a house designed by Damichael Jenkins, is good, but on Nov. 19, 2024, an unexpected situation arrived on their front porch.  “I take a glance at my Christmas lights and I pull up to the house and there’s this lady with kids in the driveway,” Damichael Jenkins said.  The woman asks Jenkins if he lives at the house, to which he said he did. The woman then said she didn’t believe him, grabbed her children and took off running and screaming for help.  Jenkins said he felt he was being profiled, saying he worried about a potential encounter with law enforcement. He said he initially thought the woman was bringing her children to the house for a playdate.  “I went into fear mode at that point because I knew that what I thought was going on was not the case,” Damichael Jenkins said. “She was screaming to the top of her lungs and I know that that can be a weapon in America.”  Central Ohio student sues PowerSchool over data breach A short time later, the woman returned to the house near where she thought she was being followed, this time with her husband.  “She said someone in a silver truck,” the husband can be heard saying in the security video.  “Gray truck and he came around the corner and I went in the street and so I come up with my kids and so I'm like pretend that I'm coming home and so I pull up and I start walking to your back gate and he goes ‘Are you looking for someone?’” the woman said in the video. “I said, ‘Nope,’ and then he sat here and I was like 'I need to get in..'"  “Well, that’s my husband, that’s why,” Brittany Jenkins said in the video. “He lives here.”  Brittany Jenkins believes her husband remaining calm and collected likely prevented the situation from escalating.  “We didn't want this, but now we can use this to speak out because I don't want this to happen to anyone else,” she said. “I do not want this to happen to anyone else."  “It gets real deep when someone asks the question, ‘How-- how has this affected us and how does this make us feel,’” Damichael Jenkins said.  Ohio lawmakers discuss immigration following Trump executive order “We have not gotten a knock at the door or an email to say, ‘You know what? I messed up, I messed up,’" Brittany Jenkins said. “There were so many opportunities and we have not gotten that I have empathy for people who own up to it, say, ‘You know what? I own up to it, I messed up.’ That's okay. We learn and we move on and we can teach and we can learn together.”  The Jenkins said that day plays over and over for them. In the doorbell video, the woman does apologize, but later on social media, she doubled down on her response that night and shared details about threats online users have made toward her family.  However, in a more recent video, she, with a large social media following, apologized for the way she made the couple feel, saying she “gets it” and understands why the Jenkins were rattled by the situation.  In response, the Jenkins posted the following statement: “We are pleased to see her acknowledgment of this situation that has so negatively impacted our family. We appreciate the recognition, and we hope this continues to be an educational moment for all of us as our family puts our full efforts into building strong relationships across our community.”  Deputies did respond that November night, but no charges were filed.
