Burst water pipe forces hundreds of seniors from Near West Side apartment building

About 400 residents were forced to evacuate a Near West Side apartment building overnight after a water pipe broke.A pipe ruptured about 7:15 p.m. Saturday in the basement of the Patrick Sullivan senior apartment building,, 1633 W Madison St., resulting in flooding and the loss of heat and hot water, Chicago Housing Authority officials said.City officials responded immediately and began removing residents from the building, the CHA said.Emergency crews responded to the incident just before 1 a.m. Sunday, police said. Some of the senior residents forced to evacuate the building were transported to a nearby hotel for shelter, police said.Two residents, 70 and 84, were transported to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. Chicago Housing Authority officials said they were providing meals and checking on the well-being of the people who were transported to a hotel.As of Sunday morning, crews had successfully restored heat, but they were still working to address the loss of hot water."CHA staff and contractors are continuing to assess the situation and expect to know more tomorrow," a spokesperson for the agency told the Sun-Times on Sunday night.
