When the community was asked to help foster or take initiative on social media, the results were nothing short of amazing. Current shelter capacity ‘unsafe’ at Maui Humane Society Following their call for help, Maui Humane Society found permanent homes for 14 dogs, including two off-island. Sixteen others were adopted through the Paws to Adopt program and 65 dogs are living their best life in loving foster homes. The tremendous outcome helped Maui Humane Society reduce its population from more than 70 dogs to just 34. In the process of it all, MHS also took in 17 new animals. "While we celebrate last week’s progress, we must acknowledge that capacity continues to be a challenge. Until our community can solve the issue of limited pet-friendly housing, we will continue to face the possibility of euthanizing for space," said MHS in an update. MHS said the work is far from over. The public is urged to consider fostering, adopting, donating or volunteering with the humane society.
