WinstonSalem police vehicle overturns during chase with assault suspect

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP) — A police vehicle overturned during a chase in the area of Old Lexington Road in Winston-Salem, according to Winston-Salem police.
At about 9:10 a.m. Sunday morning, police responded to a report of a violent mental health crisis involving a suspect known to police on the 4200 block of Old Lexington Road.
The suspect was accused of assaulting a family member, stealing a vehicle and leaving the scene.
While police were heading to the home, the suspect reportedly drove through residential yards and into oncoming traffic. Officers pursued the vehicle and tried to safely stop it twice before the chase ended in a nearby parking lot. Police say the suspect then tried to run away but officers managed to catch them.
During the incident, an officer was involved in a crash that caused the patrol car to overturn. The officer suffered minor injuries and is expected to recover.
No one else was hurt.
The suspect has been taken to a hospital for a mental health evaluation. Police say charges are forthcoming.
