Amite man arrested, charged with vehicular homicide in deadly headon crash

AMITE, La. (WGNO) — An Amite man accused of driving while impaired has been arrested in connection with a crash that left another man dead on Saturday, Jan. 25.
The Louisiana State Police reported that troopers responded to a crash on U.S. Highway 51 near Anderson Road around 11 p.m.
LSP officials said an initial investigation shows that 82-year-old Wilbert Banks was driving a Ford south on U.S. Highway 51 while 34-year-old Broderick McKnight was driving north. The Nissan then reportedly crossed the centerline and collided with the Ford head-on.
Banks suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. LSP officials said he was properly restrained at the time of the crash.
LSP officials said McKnight was allegedly not properly restrained at the time of the crash and was taken to a hospital with moderate injuries.
According to the LSP, "Troopers determined that McKnight was impaired at the time of the crash."
McKnight was arrested and faces charges of vehicular homicide, driving left of center, driving on a suspended license and no seatbelt.
LSP officials said the investigation is ongoing, and routine toxicology samples were collected.
