SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- As the Farmers Insurance Open wraps up on the South Course at Torrey Pines, another tournament with a special mission is taking place on the North Course.
The Farmer’s Insurance Invitational, presented by the Advocates Professional Golf Association (APGA) Tour, is showcasing the next generation of professional golfers, with a focus on supporting minority players who dream of joining the PGA Tour.
Among the competitors is San Diego native Donald Kay, who has been pursuing his pro golf dreams with the support of his parents.
“One of these days he’s going to make it for sure,” said Donald’s father, Phlek Kay, who was on the course cheering him on.

Phlek’s journey to this moment is incredible. In 1980, as a 13-year-old, his family escaped the violence of Cambodia’s communist regime, known as the Khmer Rouge.
“Maybe you have heard about the Killing Fields, 'Pol Pot,' that’s what we’ve been through, starvation, not enough to eat, plus to oppression,” Phlek said.
Arriving in the U.S. as a refugee, Phlek concentrated on building a better life. After settling in San Diego during a family vacation, he and his wife, Li, achieved their dream of becoming successful business owners, operating several shops, including Busy Bees Bagel and Bakery in La Jolla.
Now, Phlek is at Torrey Pines, supporting his 25-year-old son as he chases his own dream of making it in professional golf. Donald expressed deep gratitude for his parent’s sacrifices.

“They basically gave up their life to support me and my brother,” he said.
Donald also praised the APGA Tour for creating opportunities for players like him. The nonprofit organization is trying to break down barriers for minority golfers by providing them tournaments.

For Phlek, watching his son compete at Torrey Pines is a strong reminder of how far his family has come.
“America is a land of opportunity,” he said. “It’s just a dream come true.”
The APGA Tour event continues Sunday on the South Course at Torrey Pines, where the final round will take place.
