BELEN, N.M. (KRQE) – Hungry New Mexicans from near and far followed the scent of roasted red chile and chicharrónes to Belen for the World's Largest Matanza. Whether you came for the food, or the friendly competition, Valencia County's matanza is a welcomed sight to many and a coveted tradition for families.
"We've got to bring the community together. Some place, at least one day a year where people can get along, you know, food brings people together," said Organizer Fernando Sisneros.
Seasoned matanza goers and first-timers alike were blown away by the delicious dishes prepared by the many teams taking part.

The red chile donuts and chicharrónes had people eager to jump in line for seconds and even thirds. "The food is delicious. I've probably been to five booths now, and I've got to put my baggy pants on," shared Jennifer Saucedo of Gallup.
This year's matanza brought over 40 hogs, 2,000 pounds of potatoes, 200 gallons of red chile, and about 20,000 tortillas, but this event is about more than just satisfying hungry bellies it's about community action.
"My favorite part is at the end of the day, when we see how many people came, had a good time, and how much money we're able to raise to give out to scholarships," continued Sisneros.
