WAYNE TOWNSHIP, Ind. — Two people jumped from a balcony during a fire in Wayne Township Saturday night. Public emergency reporting systems indicate the Wayne Township Fire Department was called to investigate a reported apartment fire around 8:30 p.m. A spokesperson for the agency later confirmed firefighters found flames in an apartment hallway shortly after they arrived at the scene. When WTFD made it to the apartment, multiple individuals had evacuated onto their balconies. The residents moved to their balconies because they could next exit the building via the hallway impacted by the fire. Two of the people that fled to their balconies — one adult and one juvenile — chose to jump from their second-story apartment to the ground. WTFD reported that the jumpers were not injured. Medics checked the jumpers out, but they declined further care because they said they had not suffered any serious injuries. The residents that stayed on their balconies ultimately exited the building safely. WTFD brought the fire under control and vented the smoke out of the building. The building's stairs were still intact after the fire, so residents used those to exit the building. Residents were eventually cleared to re-enter the building. Per WTFD, nobody was injured or displaced by the fire. As of this article's publication, no additional information on the incident had been made available.
