CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- One person was killed as a south Charlotte house went up in flames Friday night, Medic officials confirmed. The Charlotte Fire Department responded to a home around 7 p.m. on Jan. 24 in the 1000 block of Montford Drive, near Woodlawn Road. Crews observed heavy fire upon arrival. A search began in the house while controlling the blaze, and unfortunately found someone dead inside. According to CFD, smoke detectors were found on the lower floor but not on the main floor. "It's crazy... I mean it's just so close to the house," says Phillip Mericle. He lives a few blocks away from the damaged home.  He says he heard the sirens last night but thought nothing of it because it is common to hear in the area. He drove past what was left of the home Saturday morning and was still lost for words. Montford Drive. (WJZY) Montford Drive. (WJZY) Montford Drive. (WJZY) It took about 30 firefighters just under an hour to control the fire. In addition to the deceased, another victim was transported to the hospital with serious injuries, Medic said. The other occupants are being assisted by the Red Cross. "It's just weird to see so close," Mericle said.  Neighbors say the community is close and tight-knit. Mericle believes the neighborhood will come together to help the needy family when the time is right. "I don't know them personally, but I'm sure that everyone around there will. I mean, everyone close to me is the same way. Everyone comes together and will help everyone out. So I'm sure they'll be able to get through this and definitely from that with the neighbors and everything," he said.  Investigators believe the fire was accidental and started in the carport area; however, the exact source is still unknown. CFD says there were no signs of criminal activity or foul play. The damage loss is estimated at $150,000. “On behalf of Charlotte Fire, I extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the victim lost in this tragic incident. Our thoughts remain with those affected as we continue to support them in the days ahead," CFD Chief Reginald Johnson said.
