APPLETON, Wis. (WFRV) -  The Great Midwest Trivia Contest, a beloved tradition at Lawrence University, returns this weekend for its 60th edition. Starting Friday at 10:37 p.m., the 50-hour marathon challenges participants nationwide with hundreds of quirky questions from obscure facts to internet oddities. Wisconsin Department of Revenue announces beginning of individual income tax season The contest’s start time, a precise 10:37 p.m., is part of its long-standing tradition, rooted in the original event’s technical delay. Since then, teams have gathered annually to compete in one of the university’s most exciting winter events. "It's a pretty big thing. Auditions were months ago, last term," Michael Hale, a trivia master said, "That's where I tried out and got accepted as a trivia master. Ever since then, we've been planning everything out. Writing questions." Participants call in to answer questions, with three tries per question, while trivia masters keep the event running smoothly via Twitch. This year, photo-based questions will add a new visual element to the competition. For many, the contest is about more than just trivia, it's about community. "I mean it's an absolute blast, sometimes in those really late hours it can get kind of crazy when you are all just losing your minds," said Hale. Rebecca Reynolds, another trivia master, reflected on the contest's importance. "It’s one of my favorite traditions. As a freshman, I played for 25 hours straight, and now I’m part of the team that makes it happen." ‘Hope they’ll enjoy it as much as we do’: Homes near and far up for rent for NFL Draft The event has grown over the years, but its core remains the same, a fun, challenging test of knowledge that connects generations of Lawrence University students, from current to alumni. As the 60th edition kicks off, the Great Midwest Trivia Contest continues to be a highlight of the winter term at Lawrence University, one that brings excitement, creativity, and community to all who participate.
