BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — Today, more than a hundred tribes across the nation came together in the capitol city to participate in Native Inc.'s second ever Winter Jam Powwow.
At the Bismarck Event Center, Native American performers came together to sing, dance, and learn the meaning of their culture.
The Winter Jam Powwow concludes the Tribal Econ Summit, an event that looks to grow and promote tribal economies and Indigenous-owned businesses.
In fact, dozens of Native vendors got a chance to sell handmade goods like jewelry, clothes, and more during today's powwow.
Performers could compete in both singing and dancing competitions.
Cash prizes ranged from $100 to $5,000. But the powwow's MC says this event is a lot more than just about money.
"When people learn about powwows, and the dances and the songs, it's kind of a combination of the history and the culture of Native people and what it's become today," says MC Whitney Rencountre. "It's an evolution of our songs and dances; it's important because it helps with our identity and connects us with our ancestors."
Officials say Native Inc.'s powwow received a great turnout, as they say they were one of the only powwows taking place this weekend.
