Fundraiser launched for Cook County sheriff’s deputy killed in Turks and Caicos

The family of a Cook County sheriff’s deputy who was hit and killed by a stray bullet while on vacation in Turks and Caicos this month has launched a fundraiser to help cover funeral costs.Deputy Shamone Duncan, 50, was celebrating her sister’s 40th birthday on the rooftop of the Aziza Restaurant & Lounge in Grace Bay when she was hit by a stray bullet about 10 p.m. Jan. 18. A man was killed, and a 29-year old man was wounded in the shooting.“She was a beacon of strength, compassion and leadership, touching countless lives in her community and beyond,” the GoFundMe stated. “Above all, Shamone was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister and friend.”Duncan was a 20-year veteran of the county’s Department of Corrections — “a testament to her unwavering dedication to justice and her passion for protecting others,” her family wrote in the fundraiser.She had been assigned to Cermak Health Services at Cook County Jail, the sheriff’s office said.

“Our hearts are broken for the family of Deputy Shamone Duncan,” a sheriff’s spokesperson previously said in a statement. “We are in contact with her family to provide any support they need during this difficult time and are supporting her colleagues as they process this terrible news.”As the shots were fired, restaurant patrons took cover, but Duncan stood up and was struck, her son, Shamon Payton, told the Sun-Times.“I think when everybody got down and she stood up, she was turning on her cop senses,” said Payton, 34. “I think her training kicked in and her instinct was to lead — even in the most craziest situation.“She had this strong conviction for helping people. That was my mom’s thing,” he said.Duncan was also an active member of her local Order of the Eastern Star, a charitable service organization, which her family said exemplified “her deep commitment to faith, service and community.”The fundraiser has a goal of $9,000.
