FORECAST: A dry weekend and mainly quiet work week ahead
Jan 25, 2025
This evening won't be as cold as this past week, but the thermometer around the District will still only be near the freezing mark under variably cloudy skies.
Sunday looks cloudy, but it will be a dry day and change to a mostly clear and seasonably cold night. Monday and throughout the work week, we will see no precipitation and, over time, moderate temperatures. Two things will occur in the DMV with a couple of fast-moving disturbances moving across the region beginning late Monday. The first will be an increase in the winds, especially Tuesday through Thursday, and the second will be the occasional on-and-off snows across the mountains.
Monday night through Tuesday, an area of high pressure will be centered along the Gulf Coast, while a front to the north will put the DMV between both systems. This will help kickstart the winds, picking up and sticking around for a few days. Most of the area will remain dry, but a few snow showers could sneak into parts of western Maryland.
A dry arctic front will push through the area and out to sea by Wednesday night. Due to snowfall accumulation in this area, typical upslope snow showers will increase along and behind the cold front from late Wednesday to early Thursday, which could lead to travel problems outside the mountains. A few rain or snow showers could spill east toward the Blue Ridge/Catoctin Mountains, but most of the area should remain dry.
Towards the end of the week, while Thursday will feel chilly, a quick temperature change will begin by the weekend. Also, while Thursday and Friday look to be dry, over the weekend, a storm system moving out of the central U.S. could bring a chance of rain showers to the DMV by the weekend. Regarding temperatures in the region, we will remain near to above-average, with highs in the 40s to mid-50s and lows in the upper 20s to lower 30s.
