WEBSTER, N.Y. (WROC) – A portion of Wilbert's Premium Auto Parts on Salt Road was destroyed in a 4-alarm fire Saturday morning, officials confirmed to News 8. According to the Assistant Fire Chief of the Webster Volunteer Fire Department, crews were called to the scene just before 11 a.m. by a passerby who reported smoke from the building. The fire was discovered by crews in the attic of the large auto parts building, making things difficult for firefighters. Crews worked for hours in the bitter cold, officials said. The hydrant needed for the job had even frozen over. "We did have trouble establishing a water supply, there was an issue with the hydrant - took us another couple of minutes to establish a water supply, but that also was another reason for the multiple alarms," said Steve Kozak, Assistant Chief of the Webster Fire District. Kozak told News 8 that at one point, the roof of the building housing the fire had collapsed. Multiple crews responded, including at least one from Wayne County. "A big thank you goes out to all of our neighbors. We needed them today, and they responded immediately and helped us succeed in extinguishing this fire and protecting the main building. So again, to all of our neighbors, a big, huge thank you because we were successful because of them," Kozak said. Kozak told News 8 that ensuring the main building wasn't impacted by the fire remained a priority. According to Kozak, while the auto parts building was rendered a total loss, the main building and the surrounding property only had smoke damage. As crews worked the fire, residents nearby could see a thick cloud of black smoke hovering over Salt Road.
