TOPEKA (KSNT) - Governor Laura Kelly gave only brief remarks when asked what her thoughts were on a recent heated argument between two elected officials at a Topeka bar. 27 News sought a response from Kelly on the incident on Friday, Jan. 24. She addressed the situation but said the argument between officials was not something she would be taking action on. "One person is a city councilmember in Wichita, one is a legislator here in the house so I don't have any jurisdiction over that," Kelly said. 200 Kansas Army troops sent to U.S.-Mexico border Wichita City Council member Brandon Johnson and Kansas Democrat Representative Ford Carr, who serves in House District 84 in the Wichita area, were spotted having an aggressive argument at The Celtic Fox bar and restaurant in downtown Topeka recently. The argument continued with many curse words shouted and Kansas Representative Henry Helgerson getting shoved into a table despite other lawmakers and officials trying to intervene. Kansas Democrat House Minority Leader Brandon Woodard told 27 News on Jan. 23 there are procedures to follow after incidents like this happen. He said the argument is part of an "ongoing conversation" in the House. "We're taking this matter seriously and are committed to resolving it," Woodard said. "Our focus remains serving the people of Kansas and advancing policies that meet their needs." Carr and Johnson's argument was allegedly tied to a vote concerning $125,000 for toxic spill checks in the Wichita area. 27 News will follow this story for updates and provide more information as it becomes available.
