Residents petition against decision to move Bristol 4th concert series
Jan 25, 2025
BRISTOL, R.I. (WLNE) — A petition started by Bristol residents to return the Bristol 4th of July Concert Series to Independence Park after the Bristol 4th of July General Committee voted to move it to Roger Williams University.
In an announcement released on Jan. 24, the committee said the decision was made in order to accommodate larger crowds with more parking, as well as for “security, safety, and emergency access.”
“By relocating to Roger Williams University, we will be able to provide more accessible parking, with over 800 available spaces, and improved accommodations for individuals with disabilities,” the committee said. “Additionally, the vendor area will be conveniently located near the fields, ensuring an easy and enjoyable experience for all attendees.”
The petition argued that moving the venue to one that relies on car access “breaks down the community centered nature” of the event, and that local businesses rely on the crowds brought by the concert series.
“The concerts traditionally bring in thousands of people, this vast audience supports local businesses, increasing tax revenue during this period,” the petition reads. “By restoring the Bristol 4th of July Concert Series to its original location at Independence Park, we not only uphold a cherished community tradition but also support local businesses that count on the influx of visitors this event brings.”
The petition asks for the committee to reconsider the decision, and had 518 signatures as of 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
