BRISTOL, R.I. (WPRI) -- Two people were taken to the hospital Saturday after a house fire broke out in Bristol. Firefighters were called to Coggeshall Avenue just after 10 a.m. and arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the two-story home. Bristol Fire Chief Michael DeMello told 12 News the fire started after a resident discarded a cigarette in a trash can inside the home. He called it a "labor-intensive fire" that required mutual aid to get under control. One person was sent to the hospital for smoke inhalation, while the other suffered burns, according to DeMello. He also said that a dog died in the fire. Four people were displaced since the home was heavily damaged and is now considered a total loss. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox.
