Fans get ready for Chiefs game at Mr. D's Donut Shop
Jan 25, 2025
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- It's Chiefs playoff season, and that means one thing at a local donut shop... Torching the competition. Literally.
It's a tradition that seems to keep the team winning.
Chiefs vs Bills: What to know for AFC Championship round at Arrowhead
About five years ago, Mr. D's, located at 11222 W 75th St in Shawnee, Kansas, started printing logos of playoff opponents on marshmallows, and for fun, would set them on fire.
Yes, you read that right, "set them on fire." And ironically, their first smores playoff donut featured the Buffalo Bills.
Even though it started out as an innocent and competitive gesture, the Chiefs actually ended up winning that playoff game, creating an unexpected tradition and superstition for the donut shop and many of its fans.
For the last three years, members of "D's Donut Crew" meet every morning for coffee, donuts and laughter, and take the taunting one step further. They actually stomp on the torched donuts, smashing them to smithereens.
The D's Donut Crew is an eclectic group made of more than a dozen retired people who gather every morning at the show to "chew the fat" about sports, life, and of course, donuts.
"Everybody comes from a different background," Mike Rivera of D's Donut Crew said. "John was a radiologist, George worked as a mechanic mainly, Homer was at the TWA maintenance plant by the airport, Tom worked for mobile oil, Dick… Chip and dales (laughter), and I was in human resources management."
Chiefs Fatigue? Why does everyone hate the Chiefs?
The group has become like a family. They actually have a 2025 calender featuring a member on each month, eating their favorite donut.
If there are any left over and you want your very own calendar, they are for sale at Mr. D's. All proceeds, if there are any, go toward buying the crew more donuts!
The Chiefs play the Bills at Arrowhead in the AFC Championship game on Sunday, Jan. 26 at 5:30 p.m.
