EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Over 11,000 fifth-graders throughout El Paso and the surrounding areas can get their first taste of classical music by joining the El Paso Symphony Orchestra's 4th annual "Young People's Concerts." The free shows will happen at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Feb. 4-6 at the Abraham Chavez Theatre, located at 1 Civic Center Plaza. Roughly 11,000 fifth-graders from El Paso, Socorro, Canutillo, Tornillo, Anthony, Clint, Fabens and the surrounding area can join the performance by either singing, playing recorder or violin at their seats. The concerts will be led by conductor Nathan Black and joined by singers Annie Pennies, Vinny Juarez and Samantha Davalos. The Young People's Concerts is held in partnership with the El Paso Symphony and the Link Up program's "The Orchestra Rocks" presented by the Carnegie Hall's Weill Music Institute. This is the 12th consecutive year the El Paso Symphony Orchestra has collaborated with Carnegie Hall's Weill Music Institute, EPSO said in a news release. According to EPSO, the Young People's Concerts serve as a way for the sutdents to possibly experience their first concert and as a way to apply musical concepts they have learned in school. "For over 35 years, Link Up has paired orchestras with students in grades 3–5 at schools in their local communities to explore orchestral repertoire and fundamental musical skills, including creative work and composition, through a hands-on music curriculum. Link Up addresses the urgent need for music instruction and resources by providing a free, high-quality, year-long curriculum that teachers can implement, along with printed and digital classroom materials, online video and audio resources, and the professional development and support necessary to make the program an engaging experience for students," EPSO said. The El Paso Symphony Orchestra is one of roughly 100 national and international organizations chosen for the Link Up program.
