Trouble sleeping? These weird hacks could help
Jan 25, 2025
NORTH DAKOTA (KXNET) — If you struggle to fall asleep, you're not alone — in fact, "How to fall asleep fast" is the most Googled "how to" question in the last week.
So it appears that everyone is tossing and turning more than usual.
CEO and sleep expert at MattressNextDay, Martin Seeley, is sharing seven rather unconventional pieces of wisdom that can get you snoozing quickly.
One thing Seeley suggests is taking a selfie while lying on your side. He says that if you were to draw lines down your face and torso, they are supposed to line up. However, if they don't, your pillow might be the wrong size, which impacts your sleep quality. The goal is to keep the spine in a neutral, aligned position at night.
A second tip is to drink sour (100% tart) cherry juice. Cherries, especially sour cherries, are one of the few foods that contain melatonin. A study showed that people who drank cherry juice 30 minutes before their evening meal improved their sleep quality — both sleep time and sleep efficiency.

Another tip is to try the cognitive shuffle technique — thinking of random things that are easy to visualize, non-threatening, and unrelated. The technique creates a cognitive overload that prevents the focus of anxieties or worries that may keep you awake.
The fourth tip is to wear Merino wool socks before going to bed since they can regulate your body temperature, which will signal the body that it's time to sleep. A study found that warming your feet before bed can help you fall asleep faster since it helps dilate blood vessels, which lowers the core body temperature.
Another odd thing to try is lying on the floor in a different room. Seeley said that the bed can be a source of sleep stress, so when you've been tossing and turning, moving to the floor in another, cooler room for 10-15 minutes can help. Just lay down on a soft surface like a blanket or yoga mat.
A sixth thing to try is to switch up your sleep position. It sounds weird, but try to sleep with your head at the foot of the bed or in an inclined position. Changing the orientation can help with blood circulation, reduce snoring, and ease acid reflux.
The final thing to do is to try NOT to fall asleep. It sounds counterintuitive, but deliberately trying to stay awake can make you fall asleep faster.
