HS Ice Hockey Notebook: HVM hosts 10th annual Salute to Service game
Jan 25, 2025
It has been an amazing season for the Hopewell Valley/Montgomery Co-op on the ice and off the ice as it’s taking time out to honor or military and our veterans with 10th Annual Salute to Service game.
The festivities start at 7 p.m. and the puck will drop at 7:30 p.m.
The game will feature HVM, which played Middletown South on Friday going up against Hunterdon Central.
The game will be played at Lawrenceville’s Tsai Fieldhouse and all veterans and military are welcome free of charge. Tickets will be $5.00 for all others.
It’s a great tribute to all those that have served.
The Co-op has served up a pretty good season on the ice with a 13-2 mark heading to Middletown South.
It is the Colonial Valley Conference Colonial Division champions with a 5-0 mark in the division with just one (Notre Dame) divisional game left.
Hopewell Valley/Montgomery should be the top-seed in the upcoming CVC Tournament.
Evan Jacob has 13 goals in the last six game and the senior has a career high 21 on the season.
Senior Gavin Nau has 16 goals and 14 assists and he now has 105 career points, Brendan Riewe, a senior, leads in assists with 21, his brother Jack, a sophomore, has 12 goals and nine assists and Logan Camilleri has nine goals and nine assists.
Blake Echternacht has 248 saves and Ethan Nau has 114 on the season.
The HVM defense has allowed just three goals in the five game winning streak.
Before they formed the Co-op both Hopewell Valley and Montgomery were programs that reached the state finals and now together they’d like to do it again.
Big Red Gets Local Win
The Lawrenceville team lost nine players to graduation and the Big Red has just seven seniors on the roster in a 5-9 rebuilding season.
But, Princeton Day found out this week that the Big Red is getting better as Lawrenceville claimed a 4-1 win over the Panthers.
“We are young and we have been struggling, but it was a real good win over PDS,’’ said assistant coach Sam Kosoff, who was stepping in for the under the weather Keith Dupee, the Big Red coach.
“The team is coming along it has taken a couple weeks and we are now in the heart of the season and they are starting to jell a little more,’’ added Kosoff. “The are understanding the systems we are looking to employ.’’
Jack Bartlett, Oliver Clarke and Weichen Ding are the captains and they have doing a great job.
“They have been leading by example,’’ said Kosoff. “They have been working hard to show the young kids how to do things.’’
Ayden Heron, a junior, has stepped up along with another junior Dylan Kolcun, who has been finding the back of the net.
There was a Princeton Day and Lawrenceville connection as Big Red assistant Ross Carmichael played at Princeton Day.
From the Point
— It has been a rough season for the Hamilton Tri-op, but there was some much needed offense in a game with Nutley (7-8-2).
Hamilton has been shut out for six straight games but it put up a three spot against Nutley as Ryan Smith had a pair, Tyrus Manning had a goal and two assists and Will Allen and Cole Langevin each had a helper.
Hopefully, it’s the start for Hamilton as the kids continue to work hard every game.
— Ziggy Mlodzinski, Jack Rubin and Joe Faiman are doing everything in their power to get the Lawrence/Hightstown/Ewing Tri-op pointed in the right direction.
Mlodzinski and Rubin each has six goals and Faiman had a hat trick in LHE’s (2-7) win over Central Regional
— Toms River East (16-0-1) snapped Notre Dame’s three-game winning streak. The Irish (6-6-1) definitely took a lot of positives away from the game.
— Paul VI/Camden Catholic and West Windsor-Plainsboro had a showdown on Friday night for the CVC Valley Division. PVI/CC is 6-6 and 4-0 in the division and WW-P is 6-4 and 3-1.
Paul VI/Camden Catholic won the first meeting 6-2.
WW-P is coming off a loss to Robbinsville/Allentown/Jackson Memorial.
— Hun finds itself on a win-one, lose one scenario in the last four games. But, after a 1-6-2 start to the season on a positive note the Raiders are 2-3 in the last five.
— Robbinsville/Allentown/Jackson snapped a two-game losing skid with wins over WW-P and Mendham.
Jake Lachance had two straight games with four goals and has 29 goals and 23 assists and is one of top scorers in the state. Lachance had rhe overtime game winner against Mendham.
— For the first time since the 2022-23 season Princeton Day has lost three straight, now the losses were to Christian Brothers, Delbarton and Lawrenceville.
— CVC Tournament projected seedings – 1. Hopewell Valley/Montgomery, 2. Robbinsville/Allentown/Jackson Memorial, 3. Notre Dame, 4. Princeton, 5. Paul VI/Camden Catholic 6. West Windsor-Plainsboro, 7. Lawrence, 8. Hamilton.
