LUDOWICI, Ga. (WSAV) - The Long County Sheriff's Office (LCSO) and Fort Stewart's Criminal Investigation Division (CID) are investigating a fatal shooting on the 100 block of Miller Street.
According to Long County Sheriff Craig Nobles, an active-duty military member assigned to Fort Stewart discharged a weapon, and one person died.
Nobles said the incident occurred shortly before noon on Friday, January 24.
"She said 'Mom I heard three shots,' and I said, 'Ok well stay away from the windows, stay away from the doors. Keep them locked.' When I got home, I went to talk to our next-door neighbor. She said she had heard the same thing. She was sitting in her car with her music up, and she said she heard the shots over the music," Neighbor Ruth Candler said of her daughter's account of the incident.
LCSO said the shots neighbors heard were the result of an altercation between family members, one of them being an active-duty service member.
CID is the other primary agency involved with this case, but they said they couldn't release any further details about an ongoing investigation.
