Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson and his staff of assistants will represent the Eastern Conference as coaches for the 2025 NBA All-Star Game, the league announced on Jan. 24. The honor of coaching in the All-Star game goes to the staff with the best record in each conference on Feb. 2. The Cavaliers (36-7) clinched the best record in the Eastern Conference when the Lakers beat the Celtics, 117-96, in Los Angeles on Jan. 23. The Celtics (31-14) are six games begins the Cavs. The Cavs play only five games between Jan. 24 and Feb. 2. The All-Star game is set for Feb. 16 at Chase Center in San Francisco. Atkinson, head coach of the Brooklyn Nets from 2016-20, will be an All-Star coach for the first time. He is the fourth Cavaliers coach to lead an All-Star team. Lenny Wilkins was honored in 1989, Mike Brown in 2009 and Tyronne Lue in 2016. Atkinson is in his first season coaching the Cavaliers. He was an assistant coach with the Golden State Warriors the last three years. The Cavs’ 36-7 record is the best in franchise history through the first 43 games. It is tied for the 13th-best start to a season in NBA history. The two-time Eastern Conference Coach of the Month this season (November and December) led Cleveland to a 15-0 start, marking the Cavs longest winning streak in franchise history. The Cavs put together a 12-game winning streak from Dec. 13 to Jan. 9. They are the only team in the NBA this season to have two winning streaks of 10 or more games. Atkinson’s 15-0 mark was the best start to a tenure with a team for any coach in NBA history. The Cavs lead the NBA in offensive rating (120.9), 3-point percentage (.394) and assist-to-turnover ratio (2.23). They lead the Eastern Conference in field goal percentage (.496), points per game (121.7 PPG), and points per game differential (10.1). The Cavaliers also rank in the top 10 in the NBA in defensive rating (ninth, 111.1) and 3-pointers made per game (second, 16.1). Cleveland’s offense has scored 130 or more points 10 times, already doubling the franchise record for most games in a single season with 130 or more points. For the first time, the NBA All-Star Game will feature a mini-tournament with four teams and three games. Two teams will meet in one semifinal and the remaining two teams will meet in the other semifinal. The winning teams from each game will advance to face each other in the championship. For each game, the winner will be the first team to reach or surpass 40 points. The 24 NBA All-Star selections will be divided evenly into three teams. The fourth team will be the winning team from the championship game of the Rising Stars, the annual showcase of top first- and second-year NBA players and NBA G League standouts. Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell was named an All-Star starter on Jan. 23. The reserves will be announced on Jan. 30. Atkinson and Mark Daigneault, head coach of the Oklahoma City Thunder, will each coach an NBA All-Star team.  An assistant coach from one of those staffs will serve as head coach of the Castrol Rising Stars champion, and an assistant coach from the other staff will coach the remaining All-Star team.
