Audit: WaylandCohocton CSD had no plans for lead exposure in water
Jan 24, 2025
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The Wayland-Cohocton Central School District did not implement plans to reduce lead exposure in water outlets, according to an audit report by the NYS Comptroller's Office.
The report says the district did not properly test all water outlets in the district for lead contamination and did not report the results of the tests in time. District officials were accused of not sampling or testing many of the outlets due to not having a plan in place.
Furthermore, the report says the district did identify some of the outlets had actionable lead levels, did not report it to the local health department, and did not inform parents or guardians.
The Comptroller's Office says districts need to develop a sampling plan to address potable water sampling, testing, and reporting lead contamination through the Department of Health's Health Electronic Response Data System.
The state is recommended to develop plans for all water outlets used for drinking and cooking, develop procedures for all those involved in the testing, and to notify all parties in a timely manner.
After the audit was completed, the Wayland-Cohocton CSD released a statement. While they agree with the findings, they said the COVID-19 pandemic forced them to shift their focus toward the health and safety of students and staff. They will work to implement these recommendations.
