SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- Strong winds and power outages have prompted schools in East County to cancel classes for the fourth day in a row, while a major brush fire on Otay Mountain has also forced closures in Chula Vista. East County The San Diego County Office of Education has announced the following East County school closures for Friday, Jan. 24: Mountain Empire Unified School District Warner Unified School District "The safety of students and school staff is of the utmost importance to San Diego County school districts," SDCOE said. Photos captured from fires in La Jolla, Otay Mountain On Thursday, strong winds and low relative humidity fueled fires in La Jolla and Otay Mountain. In La Jolla, the Gilman Fire erupted near buildings and prompted evacuations, but was knocked down after burning three acres. At Otay Mountain, the Border 2 Fire continues to burn into Friday morning, reaching over 4,000 acres. Chula Vista Due to ongoing safety concerns caused by the Border 2 Fire blaze, the Chula Vista Elementary School District announced the closure of the following schools for Friday, Jan. 24: Salt Creek, Camarena, Wolf Canyon, Olympic View, Liberty, Eastlake, Marshall, and Arroyo Vista. All other schools will remain open. All other CVESD schools remain open but on rainy day schedule due to poor air quality. The Sweetwater Union High School District also announced closures for Friday, including Eastlake Middle, Eastlake High, East Hills Academy, Olympian High, High Tech High Chula Vista, High Tech Middle Chula Vista, High Tech Elementary Chula Vista, and Arroyo Vista Charter School. All other school sites within SUHSD will remain open with limited outdoor activities. Meanwhile, a Red Flag Warning has been extended until 10 a.m. Friday for San Diego County valleys and mountains.
