Something feels achingly familiar about Syracuse Stage’s production of “Primary Trust,” even though it’s a title you won’t recognize. The plot sounds like it’s straight from a novel beloved by avid readers: Kenneth, a bookseller who’s worked at the same bookstore for 20 years, has just learned that the shop will soon be shuttered and is worried about finding a new job. Sweetening the deal for CNY audiences is the fact that Kenneth lives in Cranberry, N.Y., a small town just east of Rochester. This quiet gut-punch of a play, which won the 2024 Pulitzer Prize for drama, is evidence that the slightest of stories, impeccably told, can still hook audiences weary from too much scrolling, bingeing, and worrying about world events.
