APD says during the shooting, a resident of the apartment complex was injured and transported to the hospital. Officers say they are unsure if the resident was injured due to gunfire or flying debris from the exchange. Police say the officer was shot in the leg and was taken to a hospital. They say both the resident and the officer are expected to survive.
APD Chief of Police Harold Medina says the incident escalated quickly, with the suspect opening fire on responding officers. Chief Medina says the suspect had an interaction with police the previous day while going through a mental health crisis . He said during the interaction officers offered to take the suspect to the hospital and get them any help they needed, but the individual refused any type of help.
