LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – The City of Lexington announced new measures to improve snow removal operations after recent severe winter storms. According to city officials, eight additional snowplows are being redeployed to clear neighborhood streets, while five new plows and salt spreaders have been purchased for approximately $75,000.
In a move to further enhance snow-clearing efforts, the city, pending council approval, plans to purchase three tanker trucks to spread salt. The trucks would cost an estimated $660,000 and are expected to take around eight months to arrive.
City leaders also highlighted lessons learned during this month’s storms, particularly regarding their collaboration with Fayette County Public Schools. Commissioner of Environmental Quality and Public Works, Nancy Albright, said the city has made progress in coordinating with the school district to ensure safer bus routes but noted that work remains.
“How we sync up with Fayette County Schools—we feel like we’re on a better path this year than the year before when we had some struggles with the bus routes. We got better this year. We still have ways to go. I feel like they’ve given us better information. We’ve talked to them a little more, continuing to build that relationship. I think that’s going to be something we need to continue to work on,” Albright said.
The city remains committed to improving its response to severe weather conditions and ensuring safe travel for residents during future storms.
