CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCT) -- A planetarium in North Carolina has been nominated for Best Planetarium by USA Today's Readers' Choice 2025.
Morehead Planetarium in Chapel Hill is currently in fourth place on the list of twenty nominated planetariums. It is the first planetarium in the south and on a university campus to be nominated. It also was the eighth planetarium to be built in the United States and opened in 1949.
Astronauts in celestial navigation from the Gemini, Apollo, Mercury, Skylab and Apollo-Soyuz missions were trained at the planetarium. The first astronaut to train at Morehead Planetarium was Neil Armstrong himself.
