WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) - While President Donald Trump starts his second term many of his cabinet nominees are still awaiting confirmation in the Senate. Republicans are pushing to get the votes done, but some of the more controversial nominees are facing pushback. The Senate has confirmed just two of the president's picks, the Secretary of State and CIA director but Republican leaders say they will get all of the nominees through eventually. The Senate voted Thursday to confirm John Ratcliffe as CIA director. Senators also advanced controversial Defense Secretary pick Pete Hegseth’s nomination. Hegseth cleared a key procedural vote in the Senate Thursday, teeing up a final vote potentially later Friday. Mississippi Republican Roger Wicker supports Hegseth. "This nomination is unconventional. That may be what makes Mr. Hegseth a good choice,” said Wicker. The former Fox News host and veteran faces allegations of sexual assault and financial mismanagement at past jobs. He denies those claims. Democrats, like Rhode Island Senator Jack Reed, say he's unqualified. "Mr. Hegseth, if confirmed, will not improve our military. But destabilize it and weaken the institution,” said Reed. Two Republicans also say they won't vote for him, Senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski. Democrats are trying to slow down the process. "Our idea is to let whole truth to come out,” said Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.). Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) says, "One way or the other, these nominees will be confirmed." Other controversial nominees have hearings next week, including RFK Jr. for Health secretary and Tulsi Gabbard for Director of National Intelligence.  .
