Columbia S.C. (WSPA) - South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster requested the reinstatement of Medicaid work requirements. In 2018, Governor McMaster made the request and the application was approved by the Trump administration in 2019, but was paused during the pandemic. In 2021, President Biden withdrew the approval. Governor McMaster said this initiative will promote healthier outcomes and incentivize financial independence for South Carolinians. "People ought to work for a living. People who are receiving public funds need to, if they are able bodied people, at least try to get a job. There are all kinds of ways they can be trained. If you are receiving public funds, you need to return the favor by trying to support the community," he said. But not everyone fully supports the governor's request. Teresa Arnold, from The League of Women Voters said she worries about people who have specific exceptions, like taking care of family members. "People who are in no fault of their own are unable to work, I don't want to lose them in the process of doing a smaller expansion Medicaid," Arnold said. Arnold said she understands where the governor is coming from by making this request. "On the surface, what the governor says makes tremendous sense, but when you dig into the details of that, we're leaving out the people who need the most help." Governor McMaster said this initiative will help people. "I think that's a good request because the idea is to get people off Medicaid, not to have them stay home and just draw, but to get them moving." Governor McMaster stated that this initiative will require Medicaid beneficiaries to complete 80 hours per month of work, job training, education or community outreach. As of Thursday morning, Governor McMaster said he has not spoken with President Trump about this issue since he has made this request.
